ASTM D2709 - Water and Sediment in Middle Distillate Fuels by Centrifuge (BS&W)

We perform fuel quality testing by ASTM D2709 to measure the water and sediment contamination in gas, diesel, jet fuel, and other middle distillate fuels. Significant amounts of water and sediment in fuel can cause contamination in fuel-handling facilities and in an engine's fuel system. An accumulation of sediment in storage tanks and on filter screens can obstruct the fuel oil flow from the tank to the combustor. Water in diesel and biodiesel can cause corrosion to tanks and equipment, and if detergent is present, the water can cause emulsions or a hazy appearance. Water also supports microbiological growth in fuel.

BS&W (Bottom Sediment & Water) by ASTM D2709 determines the volume of free water and sediment in diesel and biodiesel.

We also perform water content, water contamination, and water resistance testing by ASTM D1264ASTM D1401ASTM D1533ASTM D1744ASTM D1796ASTM D4006ASTM D4007ASTM D4049ASTM D4928ASTM D95ASTM E203FTM 3463IP 386ISO 10337ISO 3733, and IP 74. These different test methods use different instruments or procedures or are used for certain sample types.
