IP 160 - Density by Hydrometer

We perform testing by IP 160 to determine the density, relative density (specific gravity), or API gravity of crude petroleum and petroleum products. Density is an important quality indicator for automotive, aviation and marine fuels, where it affects storage, handling and combustion. Density by IP 160 determines the density, relative density (specific gravity), or API gravity of crude petroleum, petroleum products, or mixtures of petroleum and nonpetroleum products normally handled as liquids, and having a Reid vapor pressure of 101.325 kPa (14.696 psi) or less.

We also perform density and gravity testing by ASTM D1298ASTM D1475ASTM D287ASTM D4052ASTM D891DIN 51757, and ISO 3675. These different test methods use different instruments or procedures or are used for certain sample types. Click on the test method number to learn more about each test.

IP 160 corresponds to ASTM D1298 and ISO 3675.
